NMPA’s New Era: Transforming Berth 9 into a Liquid Cargo Powerhouse

The Union government has approved a proposal by the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) to redevelop Berth No. 9 for handling liquid bulk cargo under a public-private partnership (PPP) model using the design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) framework. The approval was granted on March 25, according to officials.

The project will involve dismantling the existing facilities and undertaking a comprehensive redevelopment of the berth to enable the handling of crude oil, petroleum products (POL), and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

As part of the upgrade, the berth’s draft will be increased from 10.5 metres to 14 metres, with provisions to deepen it further to 19.8 metres in the future. This enhancement will allow the port to accommodate larger vessels of up to 200,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT), including Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), significantly boosting its cargo-handling capacity and operational efficiency.
