Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is preparing to immediately expand the city’s waste processing infrastructure as garbage accumulation rises due to shutdowns and underperformance at several treatment facilities.
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the civic body aims to increase waste processing capacity by nearly 300 tonnes per day in the coming days by optimising existing wet and dry waste facilities. PMC is also planning to expand the capacity of the waste-to-energy plant at Hadapsar by an additional 225 tonnes per day to improve the city’s waste management capacity.
According to solid waste management department head Santosh Warule, inspections will be carried out across facilities to identify locations where immediate expansion can be implemented.
Pune currently generates around 2,200 to 2,400 tonnes of waste daily. However, disruptions at multiple processing plants with a combined capacity of nearly 700 to 750 tonnes have resulted in increasing garbage accumulation. A key issue remains the shutdown of 150-tonne processing units at Keshavnagar due to technical problems.
