The Maharashtra government has launched a pre-feasibility study for a proposed greenfield airport near the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar district. This airport is envisioned as a key component of a broader plan to transform the region into a major multimodal logistics hub.
The study is being carried out by a joint venture between Grant Thornton and Nippon Koei India, which secured the contract through the Maharashtra Airport Development Company. A preliminary site visit has already been completed, and groundwork is currently in progress. The study is expected to be completed within six to nine months.
The proposed Vadhavan Airport will enhance regional air connectivity and cargo capacity, functioning in synergy with Navi Mumbai International Airport and Mumbai International Airport. Strategically integrated with the deep-draft, all-weather Vadhavan Port—located along the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC)—the airport is set to play a pivotal role in strengthening Maharashtra’s infrastructure network.
The Vadhavan Port is projected to boost India’s container handling capacity by 23.2 million TEUs. Supported by upcoming road, rail, and warehousing infrastructure, the combined development is poised to significantly elevate India’s presence in global maritime and logistics sectors.
