MCD Turns Waste Into Energy with New Biogas Plants

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to commission its first Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant for processing dairy waste in Ghogha Dairy, located along Narela–Bawana Road, by September 26, officials have confirmed.

This facility is part of MCD’s broader initiative to establish three biomethanation-based plants across Delhi—Ghogha Dairy, Okhla, and Ghazipur—with a combined capacity to process approximately 750 tonnes of wet waste per day. The plants will generate clean compressed biogas, suitable for use as vehicle fuel, contributing to a sustainable and circular waste management ecosystem. The largest plant, at Okhla, will process 300 tonnes per day (TPD) of municipal waste.

A senior MCD official stated, “Two of these plants will be commissioned by the end of this month, including a 200 TPD biogas facility at Nangli-Sakrawati and the 100 TPD CBG plant at Ghogha Dairy.”

These projects mark a significant step forward in Delhi’s waste-to-energy strategy, aiming to reduce landfill dependency, curb emissions, and offer cost-effective, cleaner fuel alternatives for the city’s growing energy needs.
