Construction work on the Polavaram Project in Andhra Pradesh is progressing rapidly, with the state government targeting completion by the end of the year.
One of India’s largest multipurpose irrigation initiatives, the project is designed to support agriculture, drinking water supply, and power generation. The Polavaram Dam—its central component—will be among the largest in the country and is set to feature the world’s biggest flood discharge spillway.
The project also represents a major river-linking effort, connecting the Godavari River with the Krishna River using gravity flow on an unprecedented scale. Its design is distinctive, with a right-side spillway and a left-side power generation facility, ensuring operational efficiency even during high flood conditions.
Once completed, the project is expected to irrigate vast agricultural areas, help control flooding in the Godavari delta, and generate around 960 MW of hydroelectric power—providing a major boost to regional development.
