EIL & The National Critical Mineral Mission: A Helium Milestone

Engineers India Limited (EIL) has signed an agreement to establish India’s first Helium Recovery Demonstration Plant at Kuthalam in Tamil Nadu, marking a major step towards reducing the country’s dependence on imported helium.

The project is aligned with the National Critical Mineral Mission, which aims to enhance India’s strategic position in the global energy and technology landscape. The plant will recover Grade-A helium with a purity level of 99.995 percent from natural gas streams. Helium is a critical, non-renewable resource with no synthetic substitute and is extensively used in sectors such as space exploration, semiconductor manufacturing, fibre optics, cryogenics, and advanced medical technologies, including MRI systems.

EIL’s deployment of indigenous helium recovery technology underscores India’s growing energy sovereignty and commitment to self-reliance in critical materials.
