The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the transfer of government land in Achole, Vasai, to the Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) for the construction of a 400-bed super speciality hospital.
The decision, announced by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to address the critical shortage of public healthcare infrastructure in the Vasai-Virar region, home to over 28 lakh residents but currently lacking a major government hospital.
The state had earlier sanctioned ₹250 crore for the project and released ₹25 crore to the civic body. However, construction was delayed due to pending land transfer, despite two earlier foundation stone ceremonies.
The land—originally reserved for judicial and residential use—was reallocated to VVCMC following intervention by Nallasopara MLA Rajan Naik and a special meeting convened by the Konkan Divisional Commissioner. The civic body has also been directed to ensure the land remains free of encroachments.
Currently, VVCMC operates only two small hospitals with limited super speciality services, often relying on referrals to Mumbai hospitals for advanced care. The new facility is expected to significantly enhance public health services in the region.
