Atomic Ambition: NTPC Eyes 30 New Sites for Nuclear Expansion

NTPC, India’s largest state-run power producer, is evaluating at least 30 potential locations across the country for the development of nuclear power projects, signalling a renewed push towards atomic energy as part of its clean energy expansion strategy.

The shortlisted sites are spread across five to six states, including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Odisha, though the assessment process is still at a preliminary stage. Final decisions will hinge on regulatory clearances, land availability, and alignment with the Centre’s nuclear energy framework.

“Nuclear energy, with its low-carbon profile and ability to provide stable base-load power, is increasingly being seen as a complement to renewable energy,” a source familiar with the matter said.

NTPC’s interest in nuclear power aligns with a broader policy push to expand non-fossil fuel capacity and ensure reliable electricity supply. Already active in solar, wind, and green hydrogen, a foray into nuclear energy would further strengthen NTPC’s position in India’s evolving clean energy landscape.
