Bihar's Power Future: SJVN Adds 800MW Coal Capacity

Indian power producer SJVN, primarily known for its hydropower operations, is set to expand its Buxar coal power project in Bihar by adding 800 MW to the 1,320 MW currently under construction. This expansion aims to meet India’s growing power demand, which is projected to reach 384 GW by 2032.

In line with the Ministry of Power’s plan to increase coal-based capacity by over 80 GW while promoting renewable energy, SJVN is stepping in to provide essential baseload capacity. As one of the two hydropower companies diversifying into coal, SJVN is playing a key role in this effort. The company expects to commission the first 660-MW unit at Buxar by May, with the second unit to be operational by the end of the year.

Discussions regarding investment plans and a power sale agreement with the state of Bihar are ongoing. This expansion aligns with the government’s push for state-owned power companies to go public, particularly those that are profitable.
