JSW Energy Powers Up: Salboni Project Doubled to 3,200 MW

JSW Energy has announced a major capacity expansion in West Bengal after signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) for a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) super/ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Salboni.

With this addition, JSW Energy’s total generation capacity stands at 32.1 GW, including 13.3 GW of operational assets and 14 GW under construction. The agreement with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company marks the company’s second PPA with the state, following a similar 1,600 MW deal signed in March 2025. The new plant is expected to be commissioned within six years and will operate on domestic coal under the state’s policy framework.

The expansion doubles the Salboni project’s capacity to 3,200 MW, making it JSW Energy’s largest power asset at a single location. Commenting on the development, Joint Managing Director and CEO Sharad Mahendra highlighted the plant’s strategic proximity to coal blocks and the operational synergies it offers. The project increases the company’s total thermal power capacity to 10,658 MW.
