Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on 06 September 2025 that the state government will revive the Dumboor hydropower plant, increasing its generation capacity from 3 MW to 11 MW, following damage caused by earlier flooding.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to transition towards renewable energy, as declining natural gas reserves continue to affect power generation at key plants in Rukhia, Palatana, Ramchandra Nagar, and Monarchak. Speaking at an awareness camp on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Unakoti district, Minister Nath stressed the need for forward-looking and inclusive energy planning. He underlined solar power as the most viable long-term solution—capable of lowering electricity bills and enabling households to earn income by feeding surplus energy back into the grid.
Launched in February 2024, the central scheme promotes the installation of rooftop and ground-mounted solar panels nationwide. Tripura aims to equip 50,000 households under the scheme, targeting a cumulative generation capacity of 150 MW. With approximately 10 lakh electricity consumers, the state sees this shift as essential to ensuring long-term energy security and sustainability.
