Tata Power Lights Up Mumbai's Grid with 100 MW Battery Plan

Tata Power has received approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to install a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai over the next two years.

This cutting-edge system is designed to significantly enhance the city's power grid resilience and sustainability. It will feature black start functionality, enabling quick restoration of power to essential infrastructure such as metros, hospitals, airports, and data centres during grid disturbances. Additionally, the BESS will optimize reactive power management, improving energy efficiency during peak demand periods.

The system also offers capex deferral benefits by reducing the need for expensive grid infrastructure upgrades. Beyond load balancing, the BESS will provide key ancillary services such as frequency regulation and voltage support, further strengthening grid stability. The installation will also support the integration of solar energy, storing excess power generated during the day for use during non-productive hours, helping to increase the consumption of renewable energy and meet energy storage targets.

The 100 MW BESS will be distributed across 10 strategically selected sites near major load centres in Mumbai. All operations will be closely monitored and managed from Tata Power’s Power System Control Center (PSCC).
