India has taken a major step toward energy independence with the commissioning of the country’s first MWh-scale vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) system at NTPC NETRA in Greater Noida.
Inaugurated by Manohar Lal, Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, the three MWh installation represents a significant advancement in long-duration energy storage (LDES), essential for integrating renewable energy into the national grid. Developed by NTPC’s R&D centre, the VRFB provides a safer, scalable, and longer-lasting alternative to lithium-ion batteries, reducing dependence on imported lithium and fostering domestic battery manufacturing.
This project is a cornerstone of India’s energy transition strategy, enabling cost-effective, large-scale storage to support renewable energy growth. NTPC’s initiatives in green hydrogen, carbon-neutral technologies, and innovative energy storage highlight its evolving leadership in sustainable energy solutions.
