Alandur Metro Viaduct: On Track for 2025 Completion!

Construction of the elevated viaduct at Alandur, a critical part of Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II Corridor 5, is on track for completion by December 2025. The corridor runs from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, passing through key junctions including Alandur.

On June 19, 2025, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin conducted an on-site inspection of the ongoing works, personally climbing one of the elevated structures to assess progress. He was accompanied by Minister T.M. Anbarasan and senior officials.

The Alandur stretch features a technically demanding balanced cantilever construction method, selected due to the high traffic density at the Kathipara junction. This technique enables construction over busy roads without disrupting traffic. A notable engineering feat in this segment includes a 31-metre-tall pier supporting a 125-metre-radius curve.

As per an official update, 30 out of 80 planned segments on Corridor 5 have been completed. CM Stalin also reviewed progress on Corridor 3, which connects Madhavaram to Siruseri.

The Chennai Metro Phase II project is expected to significantly improve urban mobility, ease traffic congestion, and support sustainable public transport infrastructure across the city. Notably, earlier in the project, CMRL imposed a ₹1 crore penalty on a contractor and dismissed four employees following a girder crash incident at Ramapuram, reflecting its strict stance on safety compliance.
