Bridging the Skies: Mumbai's Airport Metro Link

Mumbai Metro Gold Line (Line 8) is set to be a transformative infrastructure project, connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Spanning 34.9 km and estimated at ₹20,000 crore, the corridor is being developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with operations expected to begin by 2029.

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is in the final stages of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will soon be submitted to the state government. The tendering and bidding process is anticipated to conclude within the year.

Designed to enhance multimodal connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the Gold Line will integrate with seven existing and planned metro corridors. It will also link major transit hubs like Kurla and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), facilitating smoother connections between metro services, suburban rail, and long-distance trains.

Starting underground from Terminal 2 of CSMIA up to Chheda Nagar, the route then transitions to an elevated section along the Sion-Panvel Highway—replacing an earlier plan to route it via Palm Beach Road.

CIDCO Vice Chairman and MD Vijay Singhal highlighted the project’s strategic importance, noting its role in linking key residential and commercial zones while serving as a crucial east-west transit corridor between Mumbai’s two international airports.
