CMRL Greenlights DPRs for Major Metro Expansion Projects

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has initiated the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for two significant metro network extensions, aimed at strengthening urban mobility and multimodal integration across the city.

The first project proposes a 7-km extension of Corridor 4 from Lighthouse to High Court, improving access along the Marina Beach stretch and to prominent government institutions, including the Secretariat. This corridor will cater to both daily commuters and tourist footfall in the area.

The second proposal outlines a new 21-km corridor connecting Tambaram, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, and Velachery to Guindy Metro Station on Corridor 1. The corridor is expected to enhance connectivity between the city’s southern suburbs and the central metro network, facilitating seamless transfers at key transport hubs.

CMRL has appointed Systra MVA Consulting India to prepare DPRs for both corridors. The consultancy contracts are valued at ₹38.2 lakh and ₹96.2 lakh respectively, with a 120-day completion timeline. The scope of the DPRs includes route alignment, ridership projections, multimodal connectivity, and technical and financial feasibility.

The agreements were formalised in the presence of M.A. Siddique, Managing Director, T. Archunan, Director (Projects), and Parveen Kumar, Senior Vice President of Systra MVA Consulting.
