CMRL Pushes for Green Signal on Villivakkam Underground Link

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is awaiting approval from Southern Railway to begin construction of an underground metro section between Villivakkam Bus Terminus and Villivakkam as part of its Phase II expansion. The agency has escalated the issue to the Project Monitoring Group (PMG), a Union government body that assists in resolving bottlenecks in major infrastructure projects.

This proposed stretch is a small but important segment of Corridor 5, which will connect Madhavaram and Sholinganallur under the Phase II network planned by CMRL.

Construction on this section has faced significant delays. The setback began when the initial tender for the underground work, floated several years ago, had to be cancelled after the bidder quoted prices that were considered excessively high.

Due to pending approvals and earlier tendering challenges, the Villivakkam stretch remains one of the delayed components of the ambitious Corridor 5 project.
