GMRC Proposes Metro Extensions to Enhance Olympic Venue Access

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has proposed key metro extensions to improve connectivity to the Olympic venues, currently under review by the Centre. These extensions are part of the state's broader plan to modernize urban transit and accommodate the expected influx of both domestic and international visitors.

One major proposal involves extending Phase-II of the Metro from GIFT City to IIT-Gandhinagar, spanning seven kilometers and featuring six new stations, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,750 crore. A senior GMRC official confirmed that the plan has been submitted to the Central government for approval. Additionally, an eight-kilometer extension from Thaltej Gam to Godhavi, with a project cost of Rs 2,500 crore, is also planned as part of Phase-II. Another crucial project is focused on improving access to the airport.

GMRC has proposed a six-kilometer metro track from Koteshwar to the airport, featuring a combination of four overground and four underground stations, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,800 crore. The aim is to streamline passenger movement to and from the airport, especially during the Olympics. Originally part of Phase-II, these projects have now been reclassified under Phase-III to align with new development priorities.

GMRC has urged the central government to fast-track approvals, stressing that each project will take at least four to five years to complete. Prompt action is needed to ensure readiness ahead of the Olympics. Currently, Phase-II of the Metro, which includes routes from Motera to Sector-1 in Gandhinagar and from GNLU to GIFT City, is operational. The remaining stretch from Sector-1 to Mahatma Mandir is under construction and expected to be completed by December.
