Kolkata Metro's Purple Line Gets Go-Ahead After Land Deal

A key obstacle in the construction of Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line (Joka–Park Street) has been cleared with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and the Consulate General of Nepal.

The MoU enables the exchange of land parcels—409.53 sq. m of land from the Nepal Consulate in return for 526.34 sq. m of Metro Railway land. This agreement is critical for constructing a ramp connecting Mominpur and Kidderpore as part of the underground section of the Metro.

Negotiations between Indian and Nepalese authorities took place over several years, from 2022 to 2025, to finalise the land swap. “After multiple rounds of discussions, the Nepal government agreed to exchange this parcel of land,” stated an official involved in the project.
