Mission 2030: Bengaluru’s Railway Revolution Begins

KSR Bengaluru City station (SBC), which currently operates near saturation with 151 trains running daily, is set to undergo a major capacity expansion as part of Indian Railways’ nationwide plan to double the originating capacity of major cities by 2030.

As Bengaluru’s primary terminal, SBC will benefit from the commissioning of automatic signalling and the addition of two new platform lines in the Yeshvantpur grid. In parallel, Yesvantpur Junction (YPR), which handles around 106 trains per day, is being upgraded into a major secondary terminal with four additional platform lines, along with expanded pit and stabling facilities. Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVB) at Baiyappanahalli will also be strengthened to help decongest the city centre and accommodate more train services. Officials noted that SMVB is expected to emerge as a major terminal in the future. Bengaluru Cantonment (BNC) will continue to function as an important secondary terminal for eastern and northeastern routes.

Currently, Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVB) at Baiyappanahalli manages approximately 31 trains daily despite having substantial unused capacity, supported by modern passenger and operational infrastructure.
