Mumbai Secures 430 Acres for Mega Metro Depot in Mogarpada

In a significant development for Mumbai’s metro network, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has acquired approximately 430 acres of land in Mogarpada, Thane, to construct the city’s largest integrated Metro depot. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as the operations and maintenance hub for Metro Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11, which together span nearly 56 km—connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Mira Road.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hailed the acquisition as a “landmark step” in Mumbai’s infrastructure journey. To ensure an inclusive development approach, MMRDA has implemented a farmer-centric rehabilitation plan, offering 22.5% of the original land area as developed plots to leaseholder farmers, and 12.5% to eligible encroachers. These developed plots are expected to be handed over within 36 months.

Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde emphasized the project’s holistic planning: “With transparent land acquisition, farmer-focused rehabilitation, and future-ready engineering, we are delivering infrastructure that transforms lives.”

The project underwent extensive public consultations earlier this year, culminating in the issuance of 198 offer letters. The depot’s integrated design, recommended by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), is set to enhance operational efficiency across the metro lines. Upon completion, the network is expected to halve commute times and cater to over 1.2 million daily passengers—significantly boosting urban mobility in the eastern suburbs and Thane region.
