Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on February 26, 2026, laid the foundation stone for a 13.5-km, four-lane elevated corridor from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi along the East Coast Road (ECR). The project, estimated at ₹2,100 crore, is scheduled for completion within three years.
The elevated corridor is aimed at easing severe congestion on the busy ECR stretch, which handles nearly 70,000 vehicles ежедневно. Although the road has been widened to six lanes, traffic movement remains sluggish due to vehicles merging from numerous residential side roads. The proposed structure will enable signal-free travel by bypassing traffic halts at around 130 intersecting roads, significantly improving mobility.
Ramps are planned at key junctions including West Avenue, Neelankarai, and Uthandi, along with additional access points at LB Road and the RTO junction to ensure seamless connectivity.
The project will be implemented under the hybrid annuity model (HAM), blending elements of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) frameworks. Residents in the area have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will streamline traffic flow and improve pedestrian access, particularly near the Marundeeswarar Temple.
