GAIL’s Giant Leap: A ₹3,294 Crore Surge into UP’s Solar Sector

GAIL (India) plans to develop a 600 MW greenfield solar power project in Uttar Pradesh with an estimated investment of ₹3,294 crore.

The project will feature a co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) of around 550 MWh, aimed at enhancing grid stability and improving power supply efficiency. The EPC work is expected to be completed within 15 months, with funding to be arranged through a mix of debt and equity.

The integrated battery storage system will help address the intermittency of solar power by storing excess energy generated during peak sunlight hours and supplying it during periods of higher demand, thereby improving reliability and grid balancing.

At present, GAIL operates a relatively small renewable portfolio of about 29 MW of solar capacity, making this project a significant step forward in its clean energy transition. The investment also aligns with India’s broader push to expand non-fossil fuel capacity and reduce carbon emissions.
