Indian Railways aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030 through a diversified energy strategy that includes nuclear, solar, hydropower, wind, and thermal sources.
To meet its 10-GW traction power requirement, the Railway plans to utilize a mix of energy sources: 3 GW from renewable sources, including hydropower; 3 GW from thermal and nuclear power; and 4 GW through tie-ups with power distribution companies. A request has been made to the power ministry to allocate 2 GW of nuclear power, while 2 GW of thermal power will be secured via joint ventures and power purchase agreements.
Additionally, Indian Railways is progressing with 500 MW of round-the-clock renewable energy agreements and 1.5 GW of planned hydropower projects. By the end of this financial year, it is set to achieve 100% electrification on broad gauge routes.
