The Future of Freight: SVPI's Smart Cargo Terminal Takes Flight

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI), Ahmedabad, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Integrated Cargo Terminal (ICT), significantly enhancing its freight handling capacity. The new facility can now process up to 200,000 tonnes of cargo annually, a fourfold increase from its previous capacity of 50,000 tonnes, according to a recent company statement.

Spanning over 20,000 square meters, the terminal is equipped with advanced technologies to optimize cargo operations and security. Key features include CCTV surveillance, controlled access points, and high-performance screening systems.

Strategically positioned, the terminal will cater to a larger regional footprint, serving cargo requirements across Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

To further streamline processes, the ICT incorporates Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) at truck entry points, Handheld Terminal (HHT) operations, and barcode-based tracking systems for real-time cargo visibility. A dedicated cold chain zone has also been established to support the growing demand for safe transport of temperature-sensitive goods, particularly pharmaceuticals.

The terminal is designed to handle a wide range of shipments—including e-commerce parcels, automotive components, perishables, valuable goods, and industrial exports such as garments, chemicals, and engineering products.

With increased dock capacity and automated equipment, the new terminal is expected to significantly reduce turnaround times and improve operational efficiency, especially during high-volume periods.
