Air India Breaks Ground on Major MRO Facility in Bengaluru

Air India Group has launched the construction of a new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The ground-breaking ceremony, held on August 4, 2024, was attended by key figures including State Industries Commissioner Gunjan Krishna and officials from Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) and SIA Engineering Company.

The 35-acre facility, which marks a significant investment in the aviation sector, is expected to become a central hub for the Tata Group and create over 1,200 new jobs for aviation engineers. It will also support over 200 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Karnataka through an enhanced supply chain network.

Air India has committed Rs 1,300 crore to the project, following an MoU signed with the Karnataka government earlier this year. The MRO facility, developed in partnership with SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC), will feature a mega hangar capable of accommodating both wide-body and narrow-body aircraft for base maintenance under one roof.

The facility will be equipped with advanced maintenance technology, including overhead tele platforms, universal docking systems, and the largest vertical lift hangar doors in India. These features will set a new benchmark in aviation maintenance.

In addition to the Bengaluru facility, Air India plans to build a new wide-body hangar in Delhi to enhance line maintenance capabilities. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to establish a comprehensive maintenance ecosystem across major airports in India.
