Bengaluru's New Airport: Seven Sites Under Consideration

The Karnataka government has unveiled seven potential sites for Bengaluru's second international airport, marking a significant step in the city’s infrastructure development. This decision follows a high-level meeting led by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Industries Minister MB Patil, aimed at identifying the optimal location for the new airport.

Among the selected sites are Harohalli and Dobbaspet, both located approximately 50-60 km from Bengaluru. Additionally, five other locations near Tumakuru, including Koratagere, Kunigal, Huliyurdurga, and Malavalli, have been shortlisted based on extensive evaluations and stakeholder consultations.

The project requires about 4,000 acres of land, and the proposal will soon be sent to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for further scrutiny. Presentations from consulting firms Idec and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) were reviewed during the meeting, providing insights into the feasibility of each site.

AAI officials will conduct site visits to assess their viability, considering factors such as passenger density, connectivity, cargo potential, and environmental impact. The final decision will adhere to around 15 parameters established by the AAI, ensuring that the chosen location meets all critical criteria for the new airport.
