GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport has successfully conducted a key validation flight at the upcoming Bhogapuram Airport near Visakhapatnam, marking a major milestone toward the commencement of commercial operations.
The validation flight, operated by an Air India aircraft, assessed the airport’s airside infrastructure, runway systems, navigational aids and overall operational readiness, in line with regulatory requirements of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Completion of this exercise is a critical step toward securing the aerodrome licence.
Highlighting the project’s significance, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu said the Bhogapuram Airport would act as a catalyst for economic growth in the region. He noted that the airport would strengthen regional connectivity, generate employment and unlock Andhra Pradesh’s tourism potential, positioning Visakhapatnam as an emerging economic hub of eastern India.
Scheduled to begin operations in June 2026, the Bhogapuram Airport will feature a state-of-the-art cargo terminal and is envisioned as a major aviation hub for the region.
