Fadnavis Mandates 50/50 Land Split for Dharavi Redevelopment

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed that land under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) be evenly divided between rehabilitation units and saleable components.

At a review meeting held on May 28, Fadnavis ordered revisions to rental tenement sizes—raising units for ineligible residents within the Dharavi notified area to 350 sq. ft., and for eligible residents in planned buildings from 405 sq. ft. to 500 sq. ft. He also instructed that the twin digital survey model used in Dharavi be extended to all slums across Mumbai.

According to RTI-obtained meeting minutes, these directives will be incorporated into the DRP Master Plan, aligned with the 2016 Development Plan.

The state government has earmarked salt pan, dumping ground, and revenue lands outside Dharavi for rental housing. Residents who settled between 2011 and November 15, 2022, will be eligible for 300 sq. ft. rental homes, with an option to own them after 10 years or via an upfront payment.
