Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies (ARACT), a subsidiary of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd (ARE&M), has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd, marking a significant step in advancing India's electric vehicle (EV) sector. The agreement, focused on developing and supplying Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Lithium-Ion cells and chargers, will see these products manufactured at Amara Raja’s Gigafactory in Divitipally, Telangana.
Vikramaditya Gourineni, Executive Director of ARE&M, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, emphasizing the long-standing relationship with Piaggio India. “Our partnership with Piaggio India has been instrumental in advancing electric mobility in India. This MoU will enable us to create cutting-edge products and solutions, further indigenizing and transforming the EV sector,” Gourineni said.
Diego Graffi, Chairman & Managing Director of Piaggio Vehicles, also praised the deal, noting, “This MoU solidifies our valuable partnership with Amara Raja and will significantly enhance our EV initiatives as India shifts towards electric mobility.”
The two companies have been working together since 2020, with Amara Raja supplying 50,000 NMC Li-ion battery packs and chargers that have collectively powered over 120 crore kilometers. Additionally, ARACT recently celebrated the groundbreaking of its Customer Qualification Plant (CQP) in Divitipally, Mahabubnagar district. The plant’s Phase 1, with a 1.5 GWh capacity, will focus on manufacturing Li-ion battery packs tailored for Indian conditions and stationary energy storage.
The CQP is slated to begin operations in the first quarter of the next financial year and will produce various cell types for customer testing and validation. This project benefits from ARE&M’s collaboration with Gotion Inobat (GIB) for technology and custom solutions, further bolstering the development of India’s EV infrastructure.
