Following the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss Tamil Nadu’s objection to Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir, the Karnataka government has decided to submit a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Centre.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar noted that the earlier DPR had been rejected due to certain deficiencies and required revisions. The updated DPR will provide comprehensive project details, including the extent of forest land expected to be submerged. The state government will also establish a new office in Ramanagara—located close to both the project site and Mandya district—to house senior officials and facilitate project coordination.
On 13 November, the Supreme Court ruled that Karnataka may proceed with the project, while reiterating that the state must continue releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in line with existing agreements.
