A state-of-the-art 750-bed multispecialty paediatric hospital is set to be built on six acres at the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research campus in Guindy, Tamil Nadu. The announcement was made by Health Minister Ma. Subramanian on June 22, 2025.
With a total investment of ₹487.66 crore, this will be the largest hospital project undertaken by the Tamil Nadu government to date. The hospital will be linked to a postgraduate and super-specialty paediatric institute, functioning as a constituent medical college under the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
The upcoming seven-storey facility (including ground floor) will span 3.15 lakh sq. ft., and feature:
100 ICU beds, General and pay wards, Private suites, Dedicated hostels for doctors, nurses, students, and faculty
Advanced paediatric care infrastructure
Tenders will be issued shortly, the Minister stated, with construction expected to begin in September following recent approval from the Chief Minister. The announcement came after a site inspection with health officials, including Health Secretary P. Senthilkumar.
Dr. K. Narayanasamy, Vice-Chancellor of the university, confirmed that the hospital will include 20 departments, 14 of which are specialised units not commonly found in paediatric hospitals, such as:
Organ transplantation, Hemato-oncology, Neurology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Plastic surgery
The hospital will be fully funded and managed by the university and is envisioned as a centre of excellence in paediatric care and medical education.
