Kannur Port: A New Dawn for Malabar

The Kerala government has accelerated plans to establish the Kannur Azhikkal International Greenfield Port, aiming to drive industrial and economic growth in the Malabar region. The project will include the development of associated industrial parks and special economic zones, creating a significant economic hub.

Led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the state cabinet approved the draft project report from Malabar International Port and SEZ Limited (MIPSL), the entity responsible for the port's development. A financial structure report from the Centre for Management Development (CMD) has also been endorsed to guide the next steps.

The port is designed to accommodate Panamax-sized container ships with capacities ranging from 5,000 TEU to 75,000 DWT, supported by a 14.1-meter depth. MIPSL, established specifically for this project, will oversee its development, with the Chief Minister as its chairman.

The project’s concessionaire will share a portion of the income with the government from the outset, ensuring financial returns. This strategic move is expected to transform the Malabar region into a key industrial and trade hub, significantly boosting the local economy.
