In a bold move to combat drought and aid regions plagued by farmer suicides, Maharashtra has approved the Wainganga-Nalganga river linking project. This ₹87,342.86 crore initiative aims to irrigate 3.75 lakh hectares of land, particularly benefiting the drought-stricken Marathwada region. By diverting water from the Godavari basin to the Wainganga river system in Buldhana, the project will construct 426.52 kilometers of canals to support irrigation, drinking, and industrial water needs.
The project will impact key districts in Vidarbha, including Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Yavatmal, Akola, and Buldhana, covering 15 talukas. Thirty-one storage tanks are planned to secure water availability during the crucial Rabi season, ensuring year-round agricultural productivity.
Originally detailed by the National Water Development Agency in 2018, the project has now received approval from both the Central Water Commission and the State Water Council. It is a significant component of Maharashtra's Integrated State Water Plan.
With its focus on enhancing agricultural output and securing water resources, this project promises to deliver much-needed relief and foster development in some of Maharashtra's most vulnerable areas.
