Indus Reset: India's New Era of Water Utilization

Following the suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, the Indian government has launched a major initiative to fast-track irrigation and hydroelectric projects across the Indus River Basin. This move aims to harness additional water from the western rivers—Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab—for the benefit of Jammu & Kashmir and neighboring states.

The decision was formalized during an inter-ministerial meeting held on May 20, 2025, involving the Ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Power, and Jal Shakti. With a clear mandate for urgency, the Centre has adopted an "all hands on deck" approach to ensure projects are implemented swiftly, backed by enhanced financial and administrative support.

This renewed push is part of India's broader strategy to fully utilize its rights over the western rivers, as allowed under the treaty framework. The plan is designed to strengthen regional agricultural output, enhance energy independence, and reinforce strategic control over vital water resources.
