Reliance Industries (RIL) and DP World have introduced a new rail service connecting RIL’s Jamnagar plant in Gujarat to DP World’s inland container depot (ICD) in Ahmedabad and Mundra Port. This initiative enhances supply chain efficiency by shifting petrochemical cargo transport from road to rail, significantly reducing carbon emissions and operational costs.
Previously, the Mundra-Jamnagar-Mundra route required about 700 km of road transport per container. The new Ahmedabad-Jamnagar-Mundra rail corridor now enables the movement of 1,260 tonnes of cargo per shipment, eliminating 45 road trailer trips per journey.
Ganesh Raj, Global COO of DP World Marine Services, emphasized that the solution offers a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to road transport, improving supply chain reliability. Ravikumar Nair, Head of SCM Operations at RIL - Petchem, highlighted that this transition aligns with the company’s sustainability goals while streamlining logistics operations.
This rail service marks a significant step towards greener and more efficient industrial logistics in India.
