Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has launched the tunneling work for Chennai Metro Rail Phase-2 in downtown Royapettah. The groundbreaking ceremony, featuring the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) 'Bhavani,' marks the beginning of the 910-meter stretch between Royapettah and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai in Corridor-3.
During his visit, Udhayanidhi Stalin reviewed various sites, including the underground station construction at Royapettah and the double-decker project at Alapakkam. He also inspected the expansive 40.5-acre Poonamallee depot located in Ariyamanthanallur village.
On social media, Udhayanidhi highlighted the DMK’s commitment to improving Chennai’s public transport infrastructure. He emphasized that the Metro Rail Phase-2 inspection aligns with the party's broader transportation enhancement goals. As Minister for Special Programme Implementation, he convened a meeting with the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Authority (CUMTA) to monitor project progress and adherence to timelines.
The Chennai Metro Rail Phase-2 project, with an investment of Rs 63,246 crore, encompasses three major routes, including Madhavaram to Siruseri SIPCOT, Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass, and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. Phase-I's corridors are already operational, with Phase-2 expected to commence in phases by late 2025.
