Adani Enters India's Cooling Sector with 52,000 TR Project

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL) has entered the cooling solutions sector with a total project portfolio of 52,000 tonnes of refrigeration (TR), marking a significant step in sustainable urban infrastructure. The portfolio includes India’s largest district cooling system—currently under development—at Mundra, Gujarat, with a capacity of 45,000 TR.

An additional 7,000 TR district cooling system is also being implemented at Adani Shantigram Township in Ahmedabad. These centralized systems deliver chilled water through underground pipelines to buildings, replacing conventional air conditioning units. This model improves energy efficiency by at least 20%, according to AESL CEO Kandarp Patel.

To drive this initiative, AESL has established a wholly owned subsidiary, Adani Cooling Solutions, focused exclusively on district cooling services. The company’s model allows users to access cooling on a metered, pay-per-use basis, reducing electricity, water consumption, and maintenance costs.

A joint study with Cushman & Wakefield estimates India’s cooling market at 43 million TR, with 11 million TR concentrated in Tier-1 cities. AESL aims to capture 1.6 million TR of this demand.

Currently, Gujarat’s GIFT City is home to India’s only operational district cooling facility, with a capacity of 10,000 TR—expected to scale up to 1,80,000 TR. Alongside its foray into cooling, AESL is also ramping up its smart metering business, targeting over one crore installations by FY26. The company installed 24 lakh meters in Q1 alone.
