Sterlite Technologies (STL), a global leader in optical and digital solutions, has partnered with Hygenco to set up Maharashtra’s first green hydrogen and oxygen production facility dedicated to optical fibre manufacturing.
Located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, the facility will supply 100% green hydrogen and oxygen to STL’s Gaurav glass preform plant, a key component in the optical fibre production process. With this move, STL becomes one of the world’s first optical fibre manufacturers to fully integrate green hydrogen into its operations—advancing its goal to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030.
Under the agreement, Hygenco will build, own, and operate the plant, ensuring a stable, cost-effective supply for the next 20 years. STL’s Industry 4.0-enabled preform facility uses hydrogen and oxygen in high-temperature blast furnaces to transform silica into semiconductor-grade glass. By switching to green hydrogen, STL anticipates an annual carbon emission reduction of around 30%.
The plant also features autonomous energy management systems, real-time monitoring, and automated controls to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
