The expansion of Raxaul Airport, located near the India–Nepal border, has gained momentum following a ₹208 crore allocation by the Bihar government for land acquisition.
The initiative is aimed at improving air connectivity in Bihar’s border regions while strengthening economic and strategic links between India and Nepal. Of the total allocation, ₹207.7 crore has been released for the acquisition of 139 acres of land, with the district administration expediting compensation payments to landowners to fast-track the project.
The redevelopment plan includes a significant runway extension, increasing its length to 2,360 metres—nearly 1,000 metres longer than the existing runway. Once completed, the upgraded runway will be capable of handling larger commercial aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, in addition to accommodating Indian Air Force aircraft during emergencies or defence operations.
Nilesh Ramchandra Deore, Special Secretary in the civil aviation department, confirmed that the airport layout is finalised and construction will commence soon after the completion of compensation disbursements. The project is expected to substantially enhance regional connectivity while supporting both commercial aviation and strategic requirements.
