India is set to transform six port clusters into Mega Ports by 2047 under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. As part of this ambitious plan, four port clusters—Cochin-Vizhinjam, Galathea South Bay, Chennai-Kamarajar-Cuddalore, and Paradip—will each achieve a capacity of over 300 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Additionally, two clusters—Deendayal-Tuna Tekra and Jawaharlal Nehru-Vadhavan—are expected to surpass 500 MTPA in capacity.
The initiative emphasizes enhancing capacity and improving infrastructure at key ports, with a strong focus on utilizing public-private partnership (PPP) models and leveraging internal resources. This vision was highlighted by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
