A New Tide: How Jal Jeevan Mission is Redefining Rural Life

The Government of India, in partnership with state governments and Union Territories, has made substantial progress in expanding tap water coverage under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal. Launched in August 2019, the mission aims to provide functional tap water connections to every rural household across the country.

As of now, more than 81 percent of rural households in India have access to tap water, marking a significant milestone toward achieving universal coverage. The scheme seeks to ensure the availability of clean and safe drinking water at the household level, irrespective of geographical location, while also promoting sustainable water management practices and strengthening local infrastructure.

According to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the steady progress of JJM reflects the government’s commitment to improving living standards in rural areas through reliable access to essential water services. Beyond enhancing public health, the initiative is also contributing to economic development and overall well-being in rural India.
