Guwahati’s Brahmaputra Riverfront development project is nearing completion, set to transform the city’s riverside into a vibrant public space. Inspired by Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront, the 1.2-km stretch along the south bank—from DC Bungalow to Kacharighat—is being developed by Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) as part of a larger six-kilometre vision extending up to the Kamakhya temple.
A key segment of this broader plan, the Panbazar stretch, was inaugurated on January 20, 2024, by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This section includes the Mahabahu Brahmaputra Heritage Centre and the revitalized Padum Pukhuri pond.
With a project cost of ₹69.85 crore, the riverfront initiative blends urban beautification with ecological restoration. Key features include gabion terraces for groundwater recharge, native plant landscaping, water lily restoration, and riparian zone development. A 15-meter-wide boulevard, jogging and cycling tracks, themed gardens (fragrance, zen, and edible), children’s play zones, and landscaped open spaces are also being introduced.
The remaining portions of the riverfront are expected to be opened to the public soon, promising a dynamic and eco-friendly urban waterfront experience.
