HD Hyundai, one of the world’s leading shipbuilders, has chosen Thoothukudi as the site for its proposed mega shipyard. The decision highlights Tamil Nadu’s strengths in policy stability, coastal infrastructure, and rapid project execution, aligning with the state’s vision to emerge as a hub for high-value maritime manufacturing. The agreement was formalised in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa, and senior HD Hyundai leadership.
With its deep-water port, favourable climate, and strong industrial ecosystem—bolstered by ongoing investments in port and logistics facilities—Thoothukudi offers ideal conditions for a world-class shipyard. The project is expected to elevate South Tamil Nadu as a major contributor to India’s shipbuilding ambitions.
For HD Hyundai, the India initiative forms part of a global expansion strategy. Hannae Choi, Senior Vice President for global shipbuilding, described the venture as “the beginning of a shared dream” between the Indian and Korean shipbuilding industries, praising India’s talent, energy, and vast potential. The project not only strengthens Tamil Nadu’s industrial landscape but also enhances India’s domestic shipbuilding capacity and reduces reliance on imports.
