Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has submitted a detailed feasibility report for a water metro system in Mumbai, extending its expertise beyond Kerala. The proposed project spans a 250-km waterway network with 29 terminals and 10 routes, connecting key water bodies across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja creeks.
The report was presented to Maharashtra Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitish Rane by KMRL’s consultancy division. He has directed departments to initiate steps for implementation. This marks KMRL’s first consulting assignment won through competitive bidding, enhancing its national profile in sustainable urban transport. The feasibility study was presented at a high-level meeting chaired by Nitish Rane, with key officials including Shaji P Janardhanan, Nishanth N, Arjun Krishna K., M Pradeep Prabhakar (IAS), and Capt. Praveen Khare in attendance.
Currently, under the direction of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), KMRL is conducting similar studies in 21 cities across 11 States and two Union Territories, positioning itself as a national leader in water-based transit systems
