L&T Scales Up: The Race to 32 MW Operational Capacity

Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) plans to commission an additional 18 MW of data centre capacity by the end of March, taking its total operational capacity to 32 MW by the close of the current fiscal year. The total capital expenditure for the data centre project is estimated at around ₹1,000 crore, a company official said during the Q3 earnings conference call.

At present, 14 MW of data centre capacity is operational, with the remaining 18 MW scheduled to be brought online by the end of the fiscal year.

On the semiconductor front, L&T is pursuing a design-led chip strategy and is engaging with multiple customers. Most of the company’s investments in the semiconductor segment are currently being expensed through the profit and loss account, the official added.

In the electrolyser segment, L&T has developed a fully indigenous 4 MW stack and is in the process of scaling it up to an 8–10 MW stack, with significant order inflows expected in the near term.

For the December quarter, L&T reported a 4.2% year-on-year decline in consolidated profit after tax (PAT) to ₹3,215 crore, compared with ₹3,359 crore in the corresponding period last year. The decline was primarily attributed to a one-time provision of ₹1,191 crore towards employee benefits following the implementation of new labour codes, which was classified as an exceptional item.
