The Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS)-III in Meghalaya is approaching completion, with substantial progress achieved in both water transmission and treatment infrastructure.
Public Health Engineering Minister Marcuise N. Marak announced that pumping operations from the Phase-III dam site have been successfully completed and tested, with water now reaching the treatment plant. He highlighted the positive response from local communities and expressed confidence that the project will be commissioned in the near future.
While the primary pumping and treatment systems are already operational, work on the distribution network is still underway. This includes the laying of pipelines to ensure water supply reaches all designated localities. “Some localities are still pending, but we are hopeful of completing the work soon,” the minister noted.
With a sanctioned cost of ₹700 crore, the scheme aims to strengthen the drinking water supply in Shillong and its surrounding areas by enhancing both reliability and coverage. The successful transmission of water to the treatment facility marks a significant milestone in the project’s progress. Once fully completed, GSWSS-III is expected to greatly improve urban water availability and help address long-standing supply challenges in the region.
