The Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport has received environmental clearance (EC) from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change for the development of Phases II and III, Kerala Port Minister V.N. Vasavan announced.
The expansion plan includes extending the Phase I container terminal by 1,200 meters, enlarging the container storage yard, extending the main breakwater by 900 meters, constructing multi-purpose berths, and establishing a liquid cargo storage facility. Additionally, the project involves reclaiming 77.17 hectares of land and dredging 7.20 million cubic meters. The total estimated investment of ₹10,000 crore across all phases is expected to elevate the port’s global standing and create significant employment opportunities.
According to the Minister, the project is progressing ahead of schedule and will drive economic growth in the region. With the capacity to accommodate mother vessels, the port will reduce logistics costs for traders, improving their competitiveness.
Moreover, the project’s robust supply chain and value proposition for Exim trade are anticipated to spur related developments, positioning Vizhinjam as a key hub in the global shipping industry.
