West Bengal: The New Epicenter of India’s Land Port Revolution

West Bengal is set to play a pivotal role in India’s next phase of land port infrastructure development, driven by the strategic importance of the Siliguri Corridor and the state’s borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. Speaking at the launch of the Land Port Management System (LPMS) ‘Vinimay’, Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) Chairperson Jayant Singh said the Centre plans to develop 11 new land ports over the next three years, with West Bengal remaining a key focus area.

Highlighting the need for robust border infrastructure and management, Singh emphasized the significance of securing the Siliguri Corridor while enhancing cross-border trade and connectivity. The government is also working to transform major border crossings into multimodal trade corridors and economic hubs. In West Bengal, land allocated at Petrapole and Ghojadanga could support the development of textile clusters and other economic activities.

The newly launched LPMS ‘Vinimay’ platform aims to modernize border operations through end-to-end digital processing of cargo and passenger movement. Integrated with national logistics and customs systems, the platform enables seamless coordination among stakeholders, improves transparency, reduces delays, and strengthens trade facilitation. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of smart border management, enhanced security, and technology-driven economic growth under the Viksit Bharat framework.
