The Public Works Department (PWD) has restarted work on the Ennaikolpudur–Thumbalahalli irrigation project, which aims to channel water from the Thenpennai River to multiple lakes across Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri district.
The project includes the construction of a 50-km canal linking the Ennaikolpudur check dam with the Thumbalahalli Dam. Initially sanctioned in 2019 at a cost of Rs 175 crore, the project’s budget has since been revised to Rs 233.37 crore. Once completed, it will irrigate over 3,400 acres and supply water to 34 lakes and one dam in the region. Progress had been delayed due to land acquisition challenges and objections from farmers in Krishnagiri.
PWD officials stated that around 22.5 km of canal excavation remains, adding that land acquisition is now complete and the work is progressing rapidly. The project is expected to be finished by next year.
